Protecting the FRASER RIVER WHITE STURGEON

CONSERVATION

We are committed to being an active part of the ongoing efforts to facilitate fisheries research and establish best-practice catch and release techniques on the Fraser River.

“Yves put my girlfriend and I on the craziest sturgeon bite ever! We not only doubled up at the same time but also, caught a wild fish that was never tagged! So having the opportunity to be apart of the conservation program in BC was quite an honor. Being able to give back to the fishery by being a part of this project was so rewarding.”

Be involved in the

conservation process

On your trip you will be involved directly with the tagging program while you scan,
tag, and measure each fish with us.

Catch & Release

The Fraser River is home to one of the largest catch & release fisheries in the world for white sturgeon. All fish caught are released to maintain a healthy population.

image

Scan & tag

Each fish you encounter during a trip with us is scanned and tagged if necessary which helps us keep track of the fish population, migratory pattern and growth rates.

Data & Documentation

Data goes to the provincial government to make management decisions on how to maintain and protect the white sturgeon population.

Why is conservation important

White Sturgeon were harvested for way too long and as a result, their population was nearly wiped out in the early 1900s. In particular, sturgeon are sought after for their roe, which is used for caviar throughout the world.
